The Big 8 Challenge June 2017
Anthony Swain and his step-daughter Lucie came to kayak the length of Windermere with 12 friends in June 2017. He explains why;
“I'm 50 in August and Lucie my step-daughter is 30 in September so we discussed doing an event to do some fundraising and before we knew it we got to 8 Challenges - 1 for each of our combined decades!”
The events that Tony and Lucie chose were as below. Overall the event was named “The big 8 Challenge”
1. Swim a Mile
2. Abseil down Peel Tower (local monument which is 180ft)
3. Manchester 10K
4. Cycle Coast 2 Coast
5. Kayak Length of Windermere
6. National 3 Peaks in 24 hrs
7. Tandem SkyDive
8. Mini Triathlon
The Cause: Alzheimers Society
We decided to raise money for Alzheimers Society as my Mum had been ill with this disease for about 10yrs, unfortunately Mum died in January so it made more relevant to me. Also, my Mother-in-Law and Lucie's Nan has just been diagnosed, so it is really important to us.”
So why did they choose kayaking Windermere in particular?
“Part of the deal was to pick events which also made us face our fears. Both of us are afraid of heights so the Abseil and Sky Dive cover that and Lucie is frightened of open water so the Kayak was massive for her.”
On the day
Tony and Lucie came to our Waterhead location on the morning of the event with 12 other companions and adventurers. They were provided with double sit-on-top kayaks and all the safety equipment required, buoyancy aids, wetsuits etc. During this stage, our staff Daz and Sam were on hand to give safety advice and encouragement.
The group set off in pretty unfavourable conditions, wet and windy!
Daz and Sam accompanied The Big 8 Challengers on their paddle and were on hand to help in any way they could, giving helpful hints on technique as well as further encouragement when it was needed most. Daz took a moment between the windy sessions to take some video which can be seen here (LINK)
The group completed the challenge in 3 hours and 29 minutes which is fantastic considering the conditions - 12 to 15mph head winds and rain.
Total distance covered was 19km.
The group agreed that the day had been an amazing experience and furthermore this event helped Tony & Lucie raised £9,400 which is very close to their 10,000 target. Their Big 8 Challenge continues and we all wish them great success. If you would like to support their fundraising efforts please go to ….
Tony’s testimonial from Tripadvisor (which appears under our Windermere Canoe Kayak name).
“14 of us Kayaked the full length of Windermere for charity and had an amazing day out. Despite paddling against the wind and it raining all day! The service before the day in organising this was spot on from the office. On the day our 2 guides Sam and Daz were superb, put all the nerves at ease before we got going and once on the water were always there and thereabouts to help if needed and give little bits of advice to help us improve technique etc, Would happily recommend!”
